Switches and Bridges

  • Distribute network load providing better performance
  • Improve connectivity and isolate potential fault locations providing increased reliability and some fault tolerance
  • Can increase server availability by reducing network bottlenecks and managing traffic

Routers

  • Further distributes network load
  • Isolates network into various "sub networks" for increased privacy and decreased traffic within a sub network
  • Required to enable your private network to access the public network (a.k.a.  the Internet)

  • Provides varying amounts of perimeter security depending on the product and the installation and configuration of the product

Proxy Server

  • Provides network address and network port translation (NAT/NAPT)
  • Provides a means to log and filter incoming and outgoing network traffic

Intrusion Detection

  • "Anti-virus" like software for the network and host CPU
  • Helps to monitor how well your security policy and security implementation are doing
