What do all these terms mean? Why should you care? Let us help you select the right products for your
particular needs.
Switches and Bridges
- Distribute network load providing better performance
- Improve connectivity and isolate potential fault locations providing
increased reliability and some fault tolerance
- Can increase server availability by reducing network bottlenecks and
managing traffic
Routers
- Further distributes network load
- Isolates network into various "sub networks" for increased
privacy and decreased traffic within a sub network
- Required to enable your private network to access the public network
(a.k.a. the Internet)
Gateway
- Passes traffic between "sub networks" (This function is
usually delegated to a router but in some circumstances the
functionality can be provided by a properly equipped host computer)
- Provides a common point to control/monitor network traffic into and out
of your Private Network
Firewall
- A device and/or software that provides traffic filtering and control between your Private Network and the
Public Network (there are many firewall products of varying categories
ranging from free to thousands of dollars per installation).
Let us help you decide which is the right product for you.
- Provides a common point of control
- Provides varying amounts of perimeter security depending on the
product and the installation and configuration of the product
Proxy Server
- An important part of a security strategy
- Provides network address and network port translation (NAT/NAPT)
- Provides a means to log and filter incoming and outgoing network traffic
Intrusion Detection
- "Anti-virus" like software for the network and host CPU
- Helps to monitor how well your security policy and security
implementation are doing
- Minimizes the opportunities of your equipment being used in an attack against other
equipment/sites on the Internet
